As autumn sets in back home, we’re keeping the May 2027 planning moving forward. This month, we’re looking slightly inland to one of the region’s best day trips: The Jalon Valley (known locally as Vall de Pop).

If you want a change of scenery from the coast, a 25-minute drive up into the hills brings you to a landscape of almond groves, rustic mountain villages, and endless rows of vines. It’s ideal for a casual afternoon excursion—especially if you're keen to sample the local produce.

1. The Main Event: Bodegas Xaló

  • Location: Right at the entrance to Jalón village (opposite the riverbed).

  • The Lowdown: This is a famous local winemaking cooperative founded back in the 1960s. You can pop into their shop to buy wine straight from the barrel, or book a 90-minute guided tour and tasting.

  • What to Try: They are best known for their Moscatel white wines and Mistela (a sweet, fortified liqueur wine). It’s smooth, incredibly cheap compared to UK prices, and makes a great evening drink back on the terrace at Villa Cielo.

2. Exploring the Villages

The valley is dotted with small, traditional Spanish villages like Jalón (Xaló), Alcalalí, and Parcent.

  • The Vibe: Narrow streets, blue-domed churches, and small, family-run bakeries and butchers selling homemade sobrasada (spiced cured sausage).

  • Where to Stop: It’s worth grabbing a table in a village square for a quick coffee or a midday beer while taking in the mountain views.

3. The Scenic Drive

The drive inland via the CV-745 / CV-749 winding routes offers fantastic views of the Bernia mountain range. It’s popular with cyclists, but far easier in one of our hire cars! There are several roadside viewpoints (miradors) where you can pull over to take photos of the valley below.

Practical Info for the Trip

  • Distance from Villa Cielo: ~20–25 minutes.

  • Cost: Very budget-friendly. You can grab excellent local wine at the bodega for a few Euros per bottle.

  • How to do it: We can split into a couple of cars for an afternoon run, pick up a few cases of wine and local cheeses, and head back to the villa in time for an evening swim and BBQ.

Next month (November), we’ll be covering a classic Spanish tradition: The Sunday Paella & Evening Promenade!
